What is Epic?
Epic is a library with over 25,000 books available digitally for teachers to allow students to read in their classroom. Students have access to thousands of books, with many different genres. Teachers can recommend books for students based on interest or reading abilities. Teachers are also able to track individual student progress of how much they are reading.
Why is this a great tool?
Students can read books that interest them during silent reading or free-choice time. Since the books are available digitally, you can project select books on your smart board. Students can even build their own collections, and rate what they've read. In addition, teachers can create brief assessments for selected books that are assigned to students.
How do I use it?
Download the Epic App in Self Service.
Open up Epic app and go to Educators option.
Epic is a free app, but you will need to type in your school information.
Your account will be created. Next step, you can add students now if you wish.
If you want to assign students to read certain book(s), you will have to find a particular selection, then press the pages and plus sign symbol, located on the top left screen. This adds the book to your collection.
The dashboard is where Epic will provide for you the code so that students can log into Epic and start reading books. The dashboard is also where you can view student progress. To find certain books, go to the Explore (binoculars) icon on the left hand side.
